This Birthday Party in a Box Is a Great Way to Help Out
If you are a giver, you are going to love this birthday party in a box idea! This idea came from our mom – a teacher – hearing students over the years say that they didn’t get to have a birthday party because their parents didn’t have money for a cake or for any type of party supplies. We think the idea of gifting someone a party in a box is a helpful way to support others. Plus, the more celebrations the better, in our book! We even have some birthday party box printables for you to print and include in your gift boxes.

We came up with several different ways you can present birthday party in a box gifts. We keep our birthday party box gifts based on a simple party of cake and traditional party decorations and supplies (banner, tablecloth, noisemakers, plates, and napkins). Others may prefer to include a small gift. We find that it is difficult to include a gift though – unless you know the personality of the recipient.
Birthday Party in a Bag
In the birthday party in a bag idea, we include a small gift bag that the person using the gift can repurpose to give a gift of his/her choosing to the birthday person.

In the birthday party in a bag, we include a cake mix, a can of frosting, a few party decorations or party plates. The contents are gifted inside the bag. We have placed bags like this in our local church pantries. Sometimes, we include a baking pan and just slip it under the bag. These small stand-alone pantries are often located outside of the churches. We simply slide our bag right onto a shelf, hoping just the right person will come along and find it.
Birthday Party in a Box, Basket, or Bin
The birthday party in a box works exactly the same way except the contents given in a small box, basket, or bin rather than a gift bag. The basket can be repurposed by the recipient for many things. We find our plastic baskets or bins at Dollar General typically for $1 each.

Birthday Party in a Pan
This idea includes giving the baking pan with the cake mix and frosting. Additionally, we add a few party supplies in the pan and a candle. We also include a can of soda. More on that below.

Making a Cake with a Can of Soda
If you are planning to gift these birthday cake in a box with people going through hard times, you might wish to include an option for those who may not have pricey eggs and oil in their homes.
It’s an old hack’s is to make a 2 ingredient cake with box cake mix and soda pop. Yes, a 12 ounce can of soda can be substituted! Southern Living has a great list of popular cake, soda, and frosting combinations!
We even made a little printable (linked at the end of this post with the others) with instructions on how to substitute the can of soda for oil and eggs in cake mix. Fee free to print this off and attach it to the gift with a can of soda.

How Much for Putting Together a Birthday Party in a Box?
Like anything else, the price of putting together a birthday party in a box gift will vary based on what you add to the box. For the gifts we featured here, the prices varied from $12 to $18. We like to keep it under $15 as much as possible. We get most of the items from Dollar General – party favors, party plates, candles, cake mix, frosting, and the baking pan. Each month, we place one birthday box in one of our local food pantry boxes. And we rotate locations.
Of course, our ideas for a birthday party in a bag are not only for those going through hard financial times. These birthday party baskets can also be a welcome gift for the hectic family who has too much going on during a certain season of life.
