Mom Says…
It’s best to have all the ingredients – including the prepared Jello – laid out and ready to go. This way kids can jump right in and get to work without waiting around.
Norah Says…
You can use mermaid colors for the Jello and the mermaid tail. You can put Nerds at the bottoms of the Jello. The Nerds will look like the rocks and the seaweed at the bottom of the ocean.
Harper Says…
This is a really fun treat to make. Blue Jello tastes really good. Most kids seem to like it.
I think if you wanted to do a different theme – like a unicorn theme, it would be easy. You could just put unicorn horns on instead of mermaid tails. For a fairy theme, you could put little fairy wings on.

Expert Tips for Making Beach Themed Jello Cups
- Make sure the powder is completely dissolved in the boiling water before you pour it into the cups. If the powder isn’t fully dissolved, the Jello will turn out lumpy or gritty. That is not what you want after going for a cute end result for your mermaid cups!
- Refrigerate the gelatin for at least 4 hours or until it’s completely set. If you don’t give it enough time to chill, the gelatin may turn out droopy without proper form. You don’t want that after going through this effort!
Blue Ocean Cups (Mermaid Jello Cups)
Equipment
- 1 Pot
- 10 Plastic cups (2.5 oz) shallow
- 10 Mini forks
Ingredients
- 6 oz Jello Berry Blue flavor
- 3 cups Water divided (1.5 cups boiling and 1.5 cups cold)
- ⅓ cups Nerds Candy
Instructions
- In a pot boil 1 ½ cups of water. While that is boiling pour the Jello packet into a large mixing bowl.
- Prepare the Jello cups by placing about ½ teaspoon of nerds at the bottom of each plastic cup to act as underwater rocks.
- Once the water has boiled, pour on top of the Jello packet contents. Mix these for a couple minutes until the mix has completely dissolved.
- Pour the cold water into the hot water Jello mixture and stir for another 30 seconds.
- Pour the liquid into each Jello cup, filling about ¾ way full.
- Place these in the refrigerator for at least 4 hours.
- Once the Jello has set, remove from the refrigerator and place the edible mermaid tails and mini forks (representing Dinglehopper from Disney’s The Little Mermaid) into the jello.
- Enjoy or place on a charcuterie board for a Little Mermaid themed party.
