In this post, we’ll dive into the details of using a frosting board to create the pumpkin-shaped frosting design.

What is a Frosting Board?

A frosting board is a spin off of the now well-known charcuterie board and then the other spin off, the butter board. Whereas a traditional charcuterie board might be filled with cheese, fruits, meats, and crackers, a frosting board is full of sugar! Lots of sugar! Cookies, mini cupcakes, chocolate covered anything!

Harper Says

I like anything that comes with a ton of sugary treats! Frosting boards come with lots of different snacks. Therefore, there should be something there that most any kid will like.

Norah Says

Super cute! It has yummy Cosmic brownies and Zebra cakes! My favorite! Don’t eat too much or you might get a tummy ache.

Steps for Setting the Design on Your Halloween Frosting Board

Step 1: Prepare the icing with food coloring.

First, prepare your frosting with whichever color you desire and fill your piping bag with the preferred tip.

Step 2: Cut out a pumpkin shape and start piping the border.

On parchment paper, draw out a large pumpkin shape – basically a round circle with a stem coming from the top. Cut out the shape. Place the parchment paper pumpkin onto a large serving board. Make sure the serving platter is large enough that there is plenty of room around the cut-out so you can add the cookies and snacks around it later.

Start piping along the edge of the paper. Go all the way around.

Step 3: Fill the pumpkin outline with frosting.

As evenly as possible, continue the same process by “coloring in” the rest of the pumpkin with the icing. Then, spread the frosting in a thick layer until the pumpkin is completely filled using a narrow and flat spatula.

Step 4: Add a pumpkin face.

Be sure to make your pumpkin as cute as possible! An upturned mouth for a smile and big Oreo eyes give an extra nod to cuteness! A sliver of Cosmic Brownie serves as a stem with a little squiggly line of green gel icing for a leaf.

For the white pupil of the eye, you can scrape a bit of cream from an Oreo and shape it into circles if you do not have white icing.

Step 5: Fill in the remainder of the serving platter with sweet treats.

We like to work corner to opposite corner when filling in charcuterie boards or dessert boards. We might start with the lower left corner and fill in the upper right corner with an assortment of treats.

Do not place too many of the same treats in one area. Spread the sugary love all around the board! And whatever you do, do not leave any dead space on the board. Every space should be full. However, you want to be careful to not disturb the frosting border.

What Types of Treats to Add to a Frosting Board for Halloween

Remember, we are thinking of the frosting board as a dessert board. The frosting is for people to dip their sweet treats in. Or not. It’s totally up to the snacker as to what goes into the frosting and what doesn’t. As you can see from our idea list, a variety of cookies, small snack cakes, mini cupcakes, sour candies, and chocolate-covered pretzels work well on this pumpkin frosting board for Halloween!

Tips for Making a Frosting Board for Halloween

  • Put thought into the color scheme in advance – before shopping for treats. You want the whole board to look somewhat cohesive color wise. Picture the big pumpkin kind of like a comforter in a bedroom. You want the other items around the bedroom to complement or coordinate with the comforter. Here, there are some orange touches around the pumpkin to coordinate with the orange of the pumpkin itself.
  • Another thing to consider when shopping for treats is the use of big and small items. You don’t want all the treats to be the same size. Some cookies and candies should be small. Others should be larger.
  • Place larger items on the board first, and let everything else tumble in around and on top. This is not the time for nice neat stacks of cookies. This type of dessert board is much more attractive with a “thrown together” look.
  • Include a little unwrapped Halloween candy. It is candy season, after all!
  • Dessert boards can get expensive because you have to have a lot of filler items for the board. The board featured here features many different products. If necessary, you could provide fewer types of items (meaning you purchase fewer products and use more of each of those products on the board). Just remember to keep to large and small items and a variety.
  • Encourage guests to dip the cookies into the frosting as some may be hesitant to disturb the adorable pumpkin! Also encourage them to eat the marshmallows before they dry out and get hard.
