How to Make Halloween Jack O’Lantern Rice Krispie Treats

Take out a large cooking pot and a muffin pan. Yep, these jack o’lantern Rice Krispie treats use a muffin pan unlike the original version!

In the large pot, melt the butter before adding in the mini marshmallows. We stir and stir to keep the marshmallows from burning while they melt. Once melted, we remove the pot from the heat. Then, we had a few drops of red and yellow food coloring to the melted marshmallow mixture until we get the perfect shade of Halloween orange!

Next, we add the Rice Krispies treats, stirring gently until well combined with the sticky marshmallows.

Finally we scoop out scoops of the mixture and place them into each muffin tin, filling to just the tops of the tins. We place the muffin pan in the fridge so the balls can firm up a bit – usually about 30 minutes or so.

When firm, we pull them out. We use our hands to shape each ball into a pumpkin shape – larger on bottom than the top.

Making the Kit Kat Stems for Jack O’Lantern Rice Krispie Treats

With a small knife, Mom notches out a little hole in the top section. Then, with the knife we cut one Kit-Kat bar into three sections, discarding the middle section. And by discarding, we mean eating.

Then, we tuck the two end pieces into two different pumpkins – with the smooth chocolate end sticking up.

Drawing Faces onto the Pumpkins

We have to be careful with the faces because the gel “ink” can smear. Therefore, we usually wait until just before serving to draw on the faces.

Safety Precautions for Halloween Pumpkin Rice Krispie Treats

When it comes to making our jack o’lantern Rice Krispie treats – especially for parties where other kids and parents will eat – safety should always be our top priority. Here are a few tips to keep in mind to ensure that the Halloween peanut butter balls are both delicious and safe for everyone to enjoy.

  • We wash our hands thoroughly before and after handling food. This helps to prevent the spread of germs and bacteria.
  • We use clean utensils and equipment when making our peanut butter eyeballs. This includes bowls, spoons, measuring cups, and any other tools we may need. Mom says it is best to clean as we go so there is not a huge build up of dirty things laying around. This also helps make things easier at the end.
  • It’s important that we check the expiration dates on all of our ingredients before using them. Using expired ingredients can lead to health issues.
  • Finally, we keep our work area clean and free of clutter. This helps to prevent accidents and spills.

How to Store and Serve

Rice Krispie treats can get a stale taste somewhat quickly if they are not properly stored. It is important to keep them in an airtight container.

To store homemade Rice Krispie treats, you should first let them cool completely at room temperature. Once they are cool, you can store them in an airtight container at room temperature for up to three days. If you want to keep them for longer, you can store them in the refrigerator for up to a week. However, keep in mind that the texture of the treats may change slightly when stored in the fridge.

To be honest, we have never had any of these no-bake treats last long enough to worry about putting them in the refrigerator!

To make them even more spooky, you can serve them on a platter with some fake spiderwebs or other Halloween-themed decorations.
