Why Our Monster Oreo Balls Recipe is Great for Kids to Help in the Kitchen

Making monster Oreo balls is a great kitchen activity for kids because it is fun, easy, and there is a delicious reward at the end for the labor involved! Kids learn how to crush Oreos with a food processor or blender, mix them with cream cheese, and shape them into small evenly-shaped balls. This activity can help improve their motor skills, hand-eye coordination, and creativity.

Additionally, it is a great opportunity to teach kids about kitchen safety and cleanliness. The idea of washing hands multiple times while following the steps is one such teaching point. Once the Oreo balls are ready, kids feel proud to share them with family or friends.

Ingredients Needed for No Bake Monster Oreo Cookies

To make our delicious monster Oreo balls, we will need a few key ingredients. Here’s what you’ll need:

  • 36 regular oreos

  • 1 12 oz. package white candy melts
  • Purple and green food coloring (or any color combination of your choice)
  • Candy eyeballs

Substitutions for Ingredients

  • For the Oreo cookies, you can use any flavor you like. We like to use the classic chocolate flavor, but you could also use the golden ones for a fun twist. If you are wondering how many Oreos are in a package, rest assured a regular 14.30 ounce package of Oreos yields 36 cookies – just enough cookies for this recipe. Pro tip: if you are hoping to have some extra Oreos just to snack on, you might consider getting the family pack!
  • When it comes to the white chocolate chips or other candy coating, we recommend using a high-quality product that will melt smoothly and have a good flavor. Our favorite to use on Oreo balls or other non-bake candies is almond bark which is easily found at grocery stores.
  • If you would rather not use cream cheese, you do have the option to use a tub of pre-made vanilla frosting instead. This ingredient is simply to help bind the chocolate together inside the Oreo ball. Either one will work fine.
  • Finally, for the candy eyes, you can purchase pre-made candy eyes at a baking supply store. But if you have trouble finding these, you could use mini chocolate chips for the eyes. You can even check out this candy googley eyes recipe if you feel up to making your own!

More Tips for Monster Oreo Balls

  • If your food processor is small, you can chop the Oreos in multiple small batches and then add the crumbs to your stand mixer along with the cream cheese. If you have a full-size food processor, you can add the cream cheese directly to the crumbs in the food processor.
  • Putting the chilled cookie balls on a skewer and using a spoon to help coat them works well.
  • If cookie balls become too soft while sitting out during the coating process, you can place them back in the freezer or refrigerator for a few minutes until they are firm again.
  • Put a little melted candy directly on the back of the eyeballs to help them stick if needed. Too much will turn out looking sloppy.

Equipment

  • 1 Food processor

Ingredients

  • 36 Oreos
  • 8 oz Cream cheese
  • 12 oz Candy melts white
  • Food coloring green and purple (or colors of your choosing)
  • 75 Candy eyeballs

Instructions

  • Place Oreos in a food processor and pulse until Oreos become fine crumbs. Alternatively, you can place Oreos in a large Ziploc bag and use a rolling pin to break them up.
  • Add cream cheese to Oreo crumbs and blend until a soft dough is formed.
  • Roll mixture into equal sized balls, and place on a cookie sheet lined with parchment paper. Place in freezer for 15 minutes, or until firm.
  • Pour entire bag of white candy melts in a microwave-safe bowl, and microwave in 20 second increments until all candy pieces are melted.
  • Separate half of the melted candy into a second bowl. Add green food coloring to one bowl and purple to the other, and mix until well blended. Reserve about ¼ cup of each color to use for drizzling.
  • Dip chilled Oreo balls in the melted candy until fully coated. Let excess drip off back in to bowl. If candy starts to become too thick, put the bowl back in the microwave for 10-15 seconds to thin out again.
  • Once all cookie balls are coated, let them sit for about 5 minutes on a cooling rack, or until the candy has hardened.
  • Put reserved green candy in a Ziploc bag, or piping bag, and snip off a tiny corner with scissors. Drizzle over the green-coated balls. Immediately add candy eyeballs while the drizzle is still wet. Repeat with purple candy. Allow all cookies to set for a while until hardened.
  • Store any leftovers in the refrigerator.
