More on Why Our Christmas Oreo Balls Recipe is Great for Kids
No one can be the Grinch when making a fun Christmas treat! Making Oreo balls is a great kitchen activity for kids because it is fun, easy, and there is a delicious reward at the end for the labor involved! Kids can learn how to crush Oreos, mix them with cream cheese, and shape them into balls.
Additionally, it is a great opportunity to teach kids about kitchen safety and cleanliness. The idea of washing hands multiple times while following the steps is one such teaching point.

We have made multiple Oreo balls recipes. And this particular recipe is one of the easier ones to make because the icing on the outside is plain, unlike some of the others. All you have to do is add the heart!
Ingredients Needed for Grinch Truffles with Oreos
To make our delicious Grinch Oreo balls, we will need a few key ingredients. Here’s what you’ll need:
- 1 package of Oreo cookies
- Cream cheese
- Green melting chocolate candies
- Red heart sprinkles
Substitutions for Ingredients in Grinch Oreo Balls
- For the Oreo cookies, you can use any flavor you like. We like to use the classic chocolate flavor, but you could also use the golden ones for a fun twist. Also, we prefer to use the Double Stuf Oreos as they provide a bit more flavor. But we have used the regular ones many times in Oreo balls with no troubles at all. If you are wondering how many Double Stuf Oreos are in a package, rest assured a 15.35 ounce package of Double Stuf Oreos yields enough cookies for this recipe. You might even have a few leftover to snack on!
- When it comes to the white chocolate chips or candy coating, we recommend using a high-quality product that will melt smoothly and have a good flavor. If you can’t find the green candy melts, you can use a different white melting chocolate and add a bit of green food coloring. Our favorite to use on Oreo balls or other non-bake candies is almond bark which is easily found at grocery stores.
- If you would rather not use cream cheese, you do have the option to use a tub of pre-made vanilla frosting instead. This ingredient is simply to help bind the chocolate together inside the Oreo ball. Either one will work fine. We usually use the cream cheese.
- Finally, for the heart sprinkles, you may have to order online if you can’t find them in your stores. Around Valentine’s Day, they are easy to find. But in other seasons, it might be more tricky. You can also use small red candies as long as they are flat so they stick to the surface of the balls.
With these ingredients in hand, we’re ready to start making our Grinch-y Oreo balls!
Steps for Making Oreo Balls
Put the Oreos inside a gallon zip bag and crush the Oreos with a rolling pin.
In a large mixing bowl, mix up softened cream cheese until smooth. Then, stir the Oreos into the blended cream cheese.
Form small balls with the mixture and place on baking sheet.
In a second microwave-safe mixing bowl, melt the green candy melts.
Set the coated balls onto a baking sheet. Place the red hearts on quickly – one per ball – before the candy coating sets.
Allow the balls to set for 15 minutes or so before eating and enjoying!
