Use Fresh Snow Only for Snow Ice Cream

A lot of people gag a bit when the mention of snow ice cream comes around. If we were talking about dirty three-day old snow, then…gag away. Animal tracks, animal droppings, animal urine, dirt, old leaves…those are the kind of things you will find in three-day old snow.

But we aren’t talking about old snow.

For our snow ice cream, we are using freshly-fallen snow. We always get the snow and scoop from the top layers soon after it has fallen. Definitenly, don’t scoop low at the ground as dirt and other contaminants may already be mixed in with the dirt.

According to scientists, chemistry professors, and researchers, eating a little clean and fresh snow in moderation is fine. If you are still wondering if it is safe to eat snow, you can read more and decide if eating our mint chocolate chip snow storm ice cream is the right move for you and your kids.

I grew up eating snow ice cream – different recipes, different ways, and freshly fallen snow. We never experienced an ounce of issue with this – nor did I hear of anyone I know having problems either. Granted, it is Arkansas – so we only got to have our snow storm ice cream about once a year or once every other year!

Use Staple Ingredients

As mentioned above, there are different recipes with different ingredients for snow ice cream. The recipe we are sharing today uses basic kitchen staples. Our snow ice cream with milk and sugar recipe is about as straightforward as it gets! The main thing one may not have on hand would be the peppermint extract.

We added crushed peppermint as an optional ingredient. We don’t always have crushed peppermint on hand to add to the ice cream, but this time we did since Christmas was less than a month ago. The crushed peppermint is not essential as long as you are using the peppermint extact. But it does have a nice crunch and a bit of color.

  • Fresh snow
  • Milk
  • Sugar
  • Peppermint extract
  • Mini chocolate chips (although you can use any style of chocolate chips you have on hand)
  • Optional: crushed peppermint

Substitutions

  • Swap a 10 ounce can of sweetened condensed milk for the milk and sugar – Using condensed milk will actually result in a creamier and more decadent snow ice cream. We wanted to feature milk in our particular recipe to show you can make snow ice cream with basic milk and sugar – for those who may not have condensed milk in their pantry during a big snow.
  • Use vanilla extract in place of the peppermint extract for a vanilla flavored ice cream.

Making Snow Storm Ice Cream

First, we gather all of our supplies and set them out on the table after our snow princess collects the snow in a large mixing bowl.

Then, we get busy mixing the snow, the milk, sugar, and the extract together. Remember that snow melts FAST! So if you can’t get the mixure pulled together quickly, your snow might start to get slushy.

Snow princess got snow all over herself as she tried to pour the snow in the bowl. Snow flurries inside, haha!

Last, we stir in the chocolate chips.

If you want to add the optional crushed peppermint, you can add them with the chocolate chips on the last step. We recommend starting with one fourth cup and seeing how strong the taste is. Peppermint flavoring can overpower quickly.

Otherwise, you can add it to the individual bowls – about one tablespoon per bowl, as we did with ours. Some may prefer to add a bit more.

Harper Says:

The ice cream is very good! The ice cream needs to be kept really cold. It can melt after a few minutes if left out. The ice cream can have several other flavors, like cherry, strawberry, vanilla, and even birthday cake.

Tips and Thoughts on Snow Storm Ice Cream

This snow cream is not the prettiest ice cream in the world. And nor is it the absolute richest, most flavorful ice cream out there. It has a lighter consistency and isn’t overly sweet. But it is a perfectly fun snow day recipe to make with kids! Kids love to make it, and they love to eat it!

You can freeze any extra mint chocolate snow ice cream in the freezer in an air-tight container and have more for the next day. To eat out of the freezer, you will need to remove the lid from the container and let the container set on the counter for a little while in order to soften it enough to eat. The ice cream will be hard as a rock at first! Or, you can heat for 10-15 seconds in the microwave just until softened enough to allow a scooper to dip into it (if the freezer bowl is also microwaveable).

We sure hope you enjoy your snow days and your snow storm ice cream!
