Before we go any further, we must point out something important: Cinco de Mayo is not as widely celebrated in Mexico as many Americans believe. By profession, our mom works with immigrant students and their families. Most of her students and their families – largely from Mexico and central America – do not celebrate Cinco de Mayo. In fact, many of them have told her they don’t even understand why Americans celebrate this day.
What is Cinco de Mayo?
Cinco de Mayo is a commemorative day from a small region of Mexico. It is the remembrance of the day the young, somewhat inexperienced Mexican Army beat a more prepared, more experienced French Army during the battle of Puebla in 1862.
Because the day commemorates a battle from that one region, the celebration of this event is not wide-spread through all of Mexico.
In fact, the majority who celebrated are from the region of Mexico and Americans in the United States. Some believe people in the United States enjoy celebrating this day because they simply enjoy the idea of having a party or going out to eat.
Whatever the reason, we are on board also here at Arkansas Girls! We love an excuse for a party or a fun Mexican treat! Plus, we love an excuse for picking Arkansas strawberries!
